Redesigning the Schwab Portfolio Services reporting platform
What if the advisor tool understood full client portfolios, not just individual accounts?
I led research and the end-to-end redesign of Schwab’s portfolio-reporting and rebalancing platform for independent financial advisors, replacing a dense, low-adoption reporting tool with an experience organized around households and client portfolios. I added modern reporting and helped bring the product to the web for the first time.
I researched how advisors across financial firms managed client portfolios and used their feedback to reorganize the platform around households. As the only designer on a team of mostly back-end engineers, I owned the product design, data visualizations, client-ready PDF reports, and front-end code.
The result: The redesign shipped from a single codebase as both a desktop and browser app. Advisors could generate a client-ready report in a few clicks. Within 18 months, the browser app accounted for 16% of total platform usage.
